After 18 years as a Christian, shouldn't I be a better person? Where's the new life? After all this time, I'm still not a very
Some drunks can walk away from the bottle and never look back. For others it is a daily struggle that they never feel like they have a victory.
So it is with my sin nature. There are some sins that I can walk away from without looking back. There are other sins that I have to guard against all day every day.
It seems to me that the question isn’t “Shouldn’t I be a better person?” The question is, “Are you a better person than you would have been without Jesus in your life?”
Mentally go back to the day that you accepted Jesus as your Lord. Think about what your life was like at that time. Mentally come forward looking for the times that God guided and protected you. Do you see yourself as a better person than what you would have been on your own?
Growth can be slow. God can guide us in ways that we miss at the time.
Are you following the basic spiritual disciplines to help build your relationship with Jesus? Do you spend regular time in prayer and study? Do you spend time in fasting and prayer? Do you have a spiritual partner to assist you? Do you have someone to keep you accountable in your spiritual walk? Are you producing spiritual fruit by helping others grow in their faith?
Clearly, I don’t know you nor do I know what your life is like. I don’t know what being a “not very nice person” looks like in your eyes. These are some basic areas to consider.
I would suggest taking some of my questions to woman (I assume by your screen name that you are a female) you trust who is more spiritually mature than you are and ask how she sees these answers in your life. Ask her to help you grow in your faith.
Great question. Thanks for asking.
